Making Spaces Accessible for everyone

Expert consulting for fragrance-free and immunocompromised-friendly environments

About Canary Air

Canary Air prioritizes clean air quality and spaces that accommodate individuals with immune compromising conditions and those who are fragrance-intolerant, as breathing is essential. Canary Air Consulting is essential because it not only brings awareness but also cultivates change, helping people understand the unseen and be inclusive of a previously forgotten population.

In Canada, 32.2% of people report experiencing adverse health effects from fragrances. Adverse health effects can include illnesses such as Asthma, MCAS, MCS, COPD, CFS/ME, Migraines, and Fibromyalgia, to name a few. Statistical data from 2020 showed that around 14% of people over the age of 15 in Canada are immunocompromised.

If businesses, schools, hospitals and other establishments do not comply with the law they risk a human rights law suit.

About Me

Hi! I'm Ari, founder of Canary Air. My journey into accessibility consulting began with my own experiences navigating spaces that weren't designed with people like me in mind. Living with fragrance sensitivities taught me firsthand how environmental barriers can exclude people from everyday activities.

After years of advocating for accommodations in my own life, I realized there was a gap in accessible consulting services focused specifically on fragrance-free and immunocompromised-friendly environments. I created Canary Air to bridge that gap.

With a background in public health and disability advocacy, I bring both lived experience and professional expertise to every consultation. My approach is compassionate, practical, and rooted in understanding that accessibility benefits everyone.

I'm passionate about helping organizations not just comply with accessibility standards, but truly embrace inclusive practices that make everyone feel welcome. Let's work together to create spaces where everyone can thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Fragrance intolerance refers to adverse health reactions to scented products, including perfumes, colognes, air fresheners, scented cleaning products, and personal care items. Symptoms can range from headaches and respiratory issues to severe allergic reactions. For some individuals, exposure to fragrances can trigger asthma attacks, migraines, or other debilitating symptoms that make it impossible to function in scented environments.

  • We provide comprehensive consulting services including environmental assessments, policy development, staff training, and implementation support. We'll work with you to create practical, effective fragrance-free policies that protect vulnerable individuals while being realistic for your organization. Our goal is to make accessibility achievable without overwhelming your team.

  • Creating accessible environments isn't just the right thing to do—it's often legally required under disability accommodation laws. Beyond compliance, fragrance-free policies expand your potential customer base, improve employee retention, and demonstrate your commitment to inclusion. Many talented employees and loyal customers are looking for businesses that prioritize accessibility. It is essential to be inclusive in a way that makes the air shared in a safe manner. Shared air practices with fragrance-free policies can enhance productivity and improve the overall safety and health of workers.

  • You could get sued for causing injury or harm to a person who is fragrance intolerant.

  • It is the law, you risk a lawsuit for non-compliance, and you could end up facing a Human Rights Lawsuit against your establishment/business.

  • I am the canary in the coal mine, as someone who has severe adverse reactions to fragrance, all I see are holes in a system that has failed people like me. Lived experience, combined with a background in psychology, has helped me see firsthand how being forced into isolation is an unacceptable way for someone to live. Education is vital in helping others to understand that changes benefit all.
